Around here these days, I’m…

prepping for a birthday party…All three of our kiddos have a birthday around the same time of year, so we are in the middle of planning a shindig where we celebrate all of them! We’re looking forward to a family gathering – made complete by a few close friends who have been especially involved in our baby girl’s life this year. What could be better than celebrating LIFE – and God’s goodness through a year that could have shattered us into a million pieces?

selling an e-book…Homeschooling Your Preschooler launched on August 1st, and I have been humbled and amazed at the incredible response from parents and educators all around the world. If you want more details, check it out! I have been really excited about getting this product into the hands of anyone who would appreciate some encouragement and inspiration for learning at home with their little ones.

summer schooling…At the start of the summer, I mapped out a variety of ways I wanted to keep the learning going throughout June, July, and August. I grabbed a couple of Kumon workbooks (My kids love those!), planned lots and lots of little outings and field trips, and rotated some new books, activities, and toys in to play around our house. Our first official day of school here starts the day after Labor Day, but at this stage, the best thing for our family has been to keep an atmosphere of learning going every day…all year long. This may sound exhausting, but the truth is, it makes things easier. We follow similar routines each day with the summer months being a bit more relaxed.

lesson planning…With that first official day of school drawing near, I have been lesson planning, and the teacher in me loves every second of this. Really I do! As we get started with Kindergarten, I am looking forward to showing you a glimpse in to what we’re doing…what resources we’re using…etc. I am excited about a great year! It’s going to be busy…but we’re ready! (I think…Pour me another cup of coffee, please.) I will be homeschooling a kindergartner who has always enjoyed workbooks, a three-year old who learns best when learning is p.h.y.s.i.c.a.l. (as in throwing, tackling, etc.), and a one-year old who has Down Syndrome. My goal? To have fun learning with my littles in whatever way works best for them!

looking forward to fall…I promise I’m not trying to rush the season, but it has been so, so, so hot here this summer, and while we’ve visited a farm, and ventured to the market a couple of times, and played at the park, and spent time at the pool and a splash pad or two, we are honestly looking forward to the fall when we can actually enjoy being outside a bit more. We love hitting some of the gorgeous trails in our state (but not when it’s 100 degrees). We love going to the zoo (but not when it’s 100 degrees). We love playing outside in the yard (but not when it’s 100 degrees). The heat has kept us indoors a good bit this summer, but as the temperatures get cooler, you are going to find us outside a ton, and we can’t wait. Around here, fall is our jam! Sweatshirts + Football + Coffee = Heaven!

reading, reading, and reading some more…I seem to go in spurts with my reading habits. I will get in a nice groove of reserving lots of things from the local library, and I will read, read, read, read, and read. Then for some reason I take a little break…and then I usually pick back up before too long. I’ve always been a reader, but in this stage of life, I have to get creative about how that happens. Last month, I mentioned reading Melissa Michaels’ books, and this month, my absolute favorite read has been The Homegrown Preschooler. Wow! Once I started it, I could not get enough! I found myself nodding my head up and down over and over again – and the pictures? I loved the pictures!
