Throughout this pregnancy, I have done a little comparing of my four pregnancies.

It has been fun to look back and see the similarities…and the differences.

Hubby’s Reaction to Two Lines on the Stick

I’ve always made him look first!

Baby #1 – “We’re having a baby! We’ve got to get this house cleaned up.” – and he jumped up and started vacuuming.

Baby #2 – “Yep, we’re havin’ another baby…See? I told you!”

Baby #3 – I’m too tired to remember this clearly…but he started saying something about how many years we had been in the diaper stage of child rearing.

Baby #4 – I have no recollection of what was said.

Others’ Reaction to Our News:

Baby #1 – Squeals, Tears, Hugs, “Congratulations!”

Baby #2 – “Was this planned?”

Baby #3 – “So how many are you planning to have?”

Baby #4 – “Are you guys Catholic?”

How We Told Our Parents the News:

Baby #1 – Drove to both of their houses in one weekend to tell them in person!

They don’t even live in the same state.

Baby #2 – Gifted them with a holiday photo that communicated the news.

Baby #3 – Skype

Baby #4 – Phone Call

First Trimester:

Baby #1 – A little queasy and a whole lot tired.

Baby #2 – A little queasy and a whole lot tired.

Baby #3 – Miserable.

Baby #4 – Miserable + 1.

Emotions:

Baby #1 – Hallmark commercials made me cry.

Baby #2 – Everything made me angry.

Baby #3 – I was too tired to cry or be angry.

Baby #4 – I was too busy to feel tired, weepy, or angry.

First-Trimester Cravings:

Baby #1 – Any and all Carbs; Oreo Milkshakes w/ Strawberries Mixed In

Baby #2 – Carbs

Baby #3 – Sweetarts, Life Cereal, Clementines, and Salad

Baby #4 – Cape Cod Kettle Chips, Crushed Ice, and Salad

Coffee?:

Baby #1 – No caffeine for my baby.

Baby #2 – 1 cup a day.

Baby #3 – 1-2 cups a day.

Baby #4 – Bring.on.the.coffee.

Food Aversions: 

Baby #1 – Garlic/Raw Meat

Baby #2 – Garlic/Raw Meat

Baby #3 – Garlic/Raw Meat

Baby #4 – Garlic/Raw Meat

Heartburn/Indigestion?

Baby #1 – No.

Baby #2 – Yes.

Baby #3 – YES!

Baby #4 – A tums here and there and I’ve been good to go.

Timing of Pregnancy:

Baby #1 – Very pregnant in the summer!

Baby #2 – Very pregnant in the summer!

Things I Did to Prepare:

Baby #1 – Stockpiled diapers; Read lots of books and articles…just to make sure I had everything covered

Baby #2 – Stockpiled diapers; Ditched the Books and Articles; Made as many freezer meals as humanly possible

Baby #3 – Stockpiled Diapers & Wipes; Made Freezer Meals

Baby #4 – Ordered Extra Diapers & Wipes from Amazon; Made Freezer Meals

Total Weight Gain:

Baby #1 – 60 lbs.

Baby #2 – 65 lbs.

Baby #3 – 60 lbs.

Baby #4 – TBD

What I Packed in My Hospital Bag: 

Baby #1 – Multiple outfit changes for mommy and baby; puzzle books, card games, a fiction paperback, DVDs of our favorite TV show, a Boppy complete with two cover changes, pillows, medicine, self-care items, a birthing ball, and the list goes on and on and on.

Baby #2 – An outfit change for mommy and a take-home outfit for baby; chap stick; a pillow; phone charger

Baby #4 – What hospital bag?

Labor/Delivery:

Baby #1 – Water broke one afternoon (in a swimming pool…long story); Didn’t deliver ’til the next afternoon (long story); Pushed for three hours – a pair of forceps, a little vacuum-assistance, and a whole lot of drama all ended with the arrival of our first little one!

Baby #2 – Spent an entire month contracting and dilated to about 4cm (TMI?); Intense contractions finally started one morning at home; Put my oldest down for a nap; Drove over to the hospital and had our second baby boy before big brother even woke up from his nap.

Baby #3 – Barely made it to the hospital in time to get my epidural.

Baby #4 – TBD

Length of Pregnancy:

Baby #1 – 39 Weeks: Baby arrived 6 days before his due date.

Baby #2 – 39 Weeks: Baby arrived 1 day before his due date.

Baby #3 – 38 Weeks: Baby arrived 12 days before her due date.

Baby #4 – TBD

Size of Baby:

Baby #1 – 9 lbs. 6 oz. – 21 inches long

Baby #2 – 10 lbs. 4 oz. – 22 inches long

Baby #3 – 7 lbs. 7 oz. – 19.5 inches long

Baby #4 – TBD

Post Partum:

Baby #1 – I was crazy.

Baby #2 – I remained fairly stable.

Baby #3 – Adjusted well.

Baby #4 – TBD

The Thing That Surprised Me Most:

Baby #1 – I loved being a new mom, but I struggled with not having adults around to talk to during the day.

Baby #2 – I melted over how much the boys loved each other from the start.

Baby #3 – When our whole world was rocked, we felt complete peace.

Why does His promised peace always surprise us?

  1. Haha, the coffee one made me laugh! That’s exactly how it progressed for me. 😀 And what is it with crushed ice? That’s been my craving this time around too!
