When I saw how quickly they were whipping up Burger Tacos, I knew I wanted to give them a try for our family.
Everyone in our house loves cheeseburgers, so I had a feeling these would be a hit, and they were.
All About These Delicious Cheeseburger Tacos
- They have all the textures in one delicious recipe! – You’ve got crunchy tortillas, juicy burgers, melted cheese, crunchy pickles, crisp lettuce, and a creamy sauce. It’s a flavor explosion!
- The sauce is spectacular! – There are so many flavors in this special burger sauce. It mimics the sauce that tops classic burgers from favorite fast food joints. Ketchup and mustard might be the old stand-bys, but this sauce is the glue that holds this cheesy burger taco together!
- The ground beef is crispy! – One of the keys to a perfect cheeseburger taco is the edge-to-edge, thin layer of ground beef. Although we’re cooking up thin layers of crispy beef, we’re searing them quickly so they stay super juicy.
- They cook up quick! – This dinnertime recipe doesn’t take nearly as long as grilling cheeseburgers. Because the beef patties are thin and seared right on to the tortilla, the whole cook time is less than 5 minutes!
- They’re a fun twist on two classics! – Taco night and classic cheeseburgers!
- They’re a light meal! – Typically, we think of cheeseburgers as greasy and heavy. By swapping out the buns for tortillas, and making the burger patties as thin as possible, it’s absolutely possible to fit my cheeseburger tacos into any low calorie diet.
Ingredients Needed For These Cheeseburger Tacos
For The Tacos
- 1 Pound of Ground Beef – One single pound of ground beef is going to turn into 5 thin beef patties.
- 5 Slices of Cheese – For a cheeseburger taco that as authentic to the American staple as possible, use slices of American cheese. If you’d like, swap them out for cheddar cheese slices or swiss and provolone.
- Pickles – We’re going to hit all the favorite burger toppings! Dill pickles add such a nice crunch. My younger kids chose to leave these off of theirs, but no worries.
- 1 Onion – Dice a red onion.
- 1 Cup of Shredded Lettuce – Bagged shredded lettuce is fine, but you’ll get better flavor and crispness if you shred your own fresh lettuce. We’ve found our favorite lettuce options at Costco.
- 5 Tortillas – For this recipe, you’re going to want to use smaller-size flour tortillas. Since you’re going to be heating them up to a slightly crunchy texture and then folding them, corn tortillas will fall apart. You also don’t want to use hard taco shells, because a key part of this recipe is cooking the hamburger patty directly on top of the tortilla.
Feeding the Nobles use Siete brand tortillas. Most of the time, we use the tortilla shells we share here, and they’ve worked well – though even smaller shells may be best.
For The Burger Sauce
- 1 Cup of Mayonnaise – This will serve as the base for your special burger sauce.
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons of Pickle Relish – See, there was a chance you were going to skip the pickles as a topping, so I’m adding them to the sauce. Muah ha ha ha.
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons of Grated Onion – We don’t typically grate onions, but you’ll want to for this sauce. Diced onion pieces are still too large.
- 1 1/2 Teaspoons of Yellow Mustard – Feel free to swap to a spicy mustard if you’d prefer!
- 1 Teaspoon of White Vinegar – This balances out the sweetness of the honey and onion.
- 1 Teaspoon of Paprika – Again, a simple swap here can add a bit more heat to your sauce, if you like.
- 1 Teaspoon of Onion Powder – Yes, more onion. This is a burger recipe, after all.
- 2 Teaspoons of Garlic Powder – Garlic should be added into any recipe it possibly can be – I will always stand by that.
- 1/2 Teaspoon of Honey – This sauce is rather acidic, and it tastes delicious that way- but just a small squeeze of honey helps to balance it out.
How To Make This Delicious Recipe For Cheeseburger Tacos
- Let’s start with the special sauce! In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, pickle relish, grated onion, mustard, and vinegar. Use a whisk or spoon to mix these wet ingredients together until well incorporated.
- Add the seasonings of paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix the seasonings in, as well as the honey.
- Prepare a taco assembly station, complete with lettuce, pickles, onions, and creamy sauce.
- Divide the ground beef into 4-5 equal sized portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten into a thin hamburger patty.
- Heat a frying pan up to medium heat, and place each hamburger patty in the pan individually. Cook the first side of the patty for about 2-3 minutes, or until properly browned and charred.
- Flip the patty over, and place a tortilla on the upward-facing cooked side. Press down hard with the back of the burger flipper on the tortilla and patty, flattening the patty out more.
- Let this second side of the burger patty cook for 2 minutes before flipping back onto the side that now has a tortilla pressed into it. This lets the tortilla warm up and become crispy.
- While the tortilla side of the patty is face down on the pan, add the slice of cheese so that it can melt.
- Remove the tortilla and patty from the pan and place on a plate. Top first with the pickles, then with shredded lettuce and onions.
- Drizzle the burger sauce on top, fold the tortilla and patty upwards into a taco shape, and enjoy!
Top Tips For Perfect Cheeseburger Tacos
- The thin burger patties are key! If you don’t have a heavy-duty spatula that is up to the job, consider using a burger press.
- Did you notice that I suggest getting all of your toppings ready before starting to cook the burgers and tortillas? That’s because these thin burgers cook up so, so fast! Trust me!
- Don’t feel beholden to the burger toppings I listed in the recipe, because there’s really no wrong way to put cheeseburger tacos together! Stick to the classics, or go crazy with eggs, bacon, mushrooms, jalapenos!
- Feel free to season your ground beef before cooking them into patties – Taco seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and lime juice all work well. You could also swap to ground turkey or ground pork, if you prefer those flavors!
