Books for My Daughter Who Has Special Needs

Over the years, we have had a variety of books gifted to us. Some of the books have been specifically designed to encourage children who have special needs. In this post I’m sharing my favorite books for my daughter who has special needs.

Our oldest daughter has Down Syndrome.

We like to refer to this gift as her having bedazzled chromosomes.

What a blessing her design is to our family!

However, along with her diagnosis comes challenges.

Because of this, we are so grateful when we find beautiful books to encourage her as she walks through the pages of her story.

Children’s Book about Down Syndrome

First up, is a book that’s specific to Down Syndrome.

He Gave Them Something Extra by Steffanie Larriba

…But what it is the world is lacking and what they do not see, is they are more alike than different and just like you and me.

This simple book has not only been great to read with my daughter but with her siblings as well!

If you have a friend or loved one who has recently received a Down Syndrome diagnosis for their child, this would be a great gift idea!

Take them a casserole, a snuggly blanket, a big hug, and this book – and then send them my way, because I want to be the first to tell them that life with Down Syndrome isn’t nearly as scary as it feels to them right now.

Books and Music by Ellie Holcomb

We have a couple of different children’s books by this author.

Who Sang the First Song by Ellie Holcomb is such a beautiful board book.

If you like gift ideas (like the one I shared above), I think this title makes such a sweet baby shower gift – for boy or girl!

…So now we know who sang the first song. God, who made us, knew all along that every heart and every thing was born with a song it was made to sing.

Emily Lex Books

I first discovered Emily Lex on Instagram. I love seeing her beautiful water color designs.

She makes it look so easy, even though I realize it’s not!

When I saw she was turning her creative ideas into a children’s book for little girls, I was so excited to purchase the book for my girls.

Twirl by Emily Lex is just as sweet as it looks!

God loves you and created you with your own special twirl. You are exactly as He wants you to be.

Emily now also has a book she has created just for little boys.

It’s called Build, and I can’t wait to gift it to my nephews.

Children’s Book by Ann Voskamp

I have to say, some of the things I’ve read by this author aren’t necessarily my style, but this children’s book is really special.

Your Brave Song by Ann Voskamp made the most perfect Aubrey Day gift one year!

Jesus loves you, makes you strong. In Him you’re brave and you belong.

I paired this book with a sweet little music box from The Keeping Company, and it was so special!

Set of Hardback Children's Books

If you are familiar with a book you think we would enjoy adding to our collection, we’d love to hear about it!

These four books are read in our house on repeat, but you know we’re always excited about adding beautiful books to our family library.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well. – Psalm 139:14
