Frozen Peanut Butter Cup Pie
In our house, it is rare that we celebrate a birthday with a traditional birthday cake. Nothing against birthday cake, we just usually like to treat the birthday person with a dessert favorite of theirs we know they will love. My youngest daughter loves strawberry desserts. Another one of my kiddos always wants cookies. Another wants 7Up and Sherbet floats for their birthday. You get the idea. With my husband being a peanut butter lover, I thought a peanut butter pie would be perfect for his 40th birthday. After browsing lots of different pie recipes, I concocted this Frozen Peanut Butter Cup Pie that has now been requested on repeat!
Why You’ll Love This Frozen Peanut Butter Cup Pie
- It’s frozen! This makes it the perfect treat at the end of a hot summer day. Or any time of year, really!
- If you have a peanut butter lover in your family, then this is guaranteed to become one of their favorite desserts.
- It uses simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have on hand! Perhaps the hardest part of making this pie is not snitching on the Reese’s cups.
- It’s a no-bake pie, meaning that you won’t need your oven or stovetop for any of it!
Ingredients Needed For This Frozen Peanut Butter Pie Recipe
- Cream Cheese – One 8 oz. package of cream cheese is all you need for this decadent dessert.
- 1.5 Cups of Confectioner’s Sugar – Also known as powdered sugar, this makes an incredibly creamy texture.
- 1 Cup of Peanut Butter – Of course! You can use either crunchy peanut butter or creamy peanut butter, depending on your preferred texture.
- 1 Cup of Milk – Skim, 2%, whole milk – any of it will work, but I usually use 2% or whole.
- One 8 oz. Container of Whipped Cream – Be sure to thaw it first. If you use Cool Whip, it may be frozen. You can also make your own whipped topping from heavy cream.
- A Large Handful of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – I usually use the mini Reese’s peanut butter cups, but you can use the regular sized ones as well. You’re going to cut them up anyhow. Have you seen the giant peanut butter cups they sell now? They’re huge! You can use those, too.
- Oreo Crust – One of the perks for this pie is that it’s no-bake. And to keep it that way, I like to use a premade crust. An Oreo crust is my favorite, but you can also use a chocolate crumb crust, graham cracker crust, or even one of those new vanilla wafer crusts.
- Chocolate Syrup – The chocolate sauce is for topping your pie. It’s one of many options – I’ll share more below!

- Using a large bowl and an electric mixer, combine softened cream cheese and sugar until the mixture is smooth. The smoother you can get the mixture at this stage, the better!
- Add peanut butter, milk, and whipped cream. You’ve basically got a peanut butter cheesecake on your hands now.
- Pour the peanut butter mixture into the ready-made crust of your choice.
- Top it and freeze for at least a few hours.
Topping Ideas For A Delicious Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie
This basic frozen peanut butter cup pie is topped with chocolate syrup and cut up Reese’s cups.
It’s perfect, but you don’t need to end it there!
Here are some other ideas for topping this delicious pie.
- Graham Cracker Crumbs – If you’re using the classic graham cracker pie shell, then sprinkling fine crumbs of graham crackers over the top is a great way to tie it all together.
- Chocolate Chips – Chocolate chips or chunks are a great topping for this pie. If the peanut butter filling has enough peanut butter taste for you, you could swap the Reese’s cups for chocolate chips.
- Hot Fudge – Chocolate syrup is delicious, but oh man – hot fudge is just the next level, isn’t it? Drizzle it on before serving, or else it’ll just freeze when you set the pie overnight.
- Dark Chocolate Curls – How fancy is this? The dark chocolate would be a great complement to the sweetness of the pie.
Storing Leftover Peanut Butter Cup Pie
This pie is meant to be frozen, before serving and after. Leaving it at room temperature will result in a bit of a mess.
Cover the pie with aluminum foil or plastic wrap before placing it in the freezer. This will help to avoid any freezer burn issues.
My Top Tips For Perfect Reese’s Peanut Butter Pie
- To make the smoothest possible cream cheese filling, set your cream cheese and whipped cream out ahead of time. Room temperature cream cheese and whipped cream come together easier and more smoothly than if they are chilled.
- Give yourself plenty of time to make this frozen pie. Sure, it’s no-bake, but it does take time for the pie to completely freeze. It’s best to make in the evening and let it freeze overnight, but your freezer may do the job in just a few hours.
- Frozen treats can sometimes be difficult to cut. You can move your pie to the fridge about half an hour before it’s time to serve to help it soften up slightly.
How To Make Your Own Whipped Cream
If you’d like to make your own whipped cream for this recipe, it’s incredibly easy to do! Here’s how.
- Start with 1 cup whipping cream or heavy cream – cold. The colder the cream, the quicker it will turn into whipped cream! Add a teaspoon vanilla extract.
- Use an electric mixer to beat the heavy whipping cream until it starts to thicken.
- Keep going! There are different thicknesses of whipped cream. For this recipe, we’re looking for stiff peaks. This means that when you pull the whisk out of the cream, the resulting peaks will stay up and not droop back into the rest of the mixture.
How To Make Your Own Chocolate Cookie Crumb Crust
My favorite crust for frozen peanut butter cup pie is Oreo crust. You can get them at just about any grocery store, but you can also make them yourself. Here’s how.
- Place chocolate cookies or Oreos in a food processor. Using medium speed, chop the cookies until they’re consistently small crumbs. You’ll need about a cup and a half of crumbs.
- Meanwhile, melt 1/3 cup butter in a small saucepan, or using a small bowl and a microwave.
- Combine the melted butter and the cookies crumbs together, and press into a pie plate.
- From here, you can either chill the crust until it’s firm, or bake it at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes. It’s delicious either way!
Ingredient Substitutes For Dietary Restrictions
There are ways to change out ingredients in this recipe to accommodate various dietary needs.
You can reduce the fat content of the pie by swapping in low fat cream cheese, low fat whipped cream, and skim milk.
If you need to avoid peanuts, switch to almond butter or sunflower seed butter.
You’ll need to top with a different type of candy bar than Reese’s, but you’ll still have a delicious pie!
