Graph the Candy

If you find yourself with lots of candy coming into your house, take advantage of the opportunity to do a little math and graph the candy.

Preschool Idea

If you have a preschooler in the house, they can simply sort their candy into little piles.

Sorting is a foundational math skill that can help young learning develop organization skills and critical-thinking abilities.

Depending on their developmental stage, they may need some assistance with this.

Elementary Learners

Your elementary-age kids would probably also enjoy sorting, but how about trying this?

Show them how to use their candy to create a candy graph of sorts.

Child Sorting Fall Candy

Sure, not all of the candy is equal in size, but it’s a fun way for your child to visualize how much of each candy they have.

Then ask them questions such as:

  • What candy do you have the most of?
  • Do you have more Reese Cups or M & M’s?
  • Is there a type of candy you only have one of this year?
  • What is the difference between the amount of Starbursts you have and the amount of Smarties you have?
  • If you had seven times the amount of packages of Skittles, how many packs of Skittles would you have?

This idea is so flexible based on the ages/stages of your kids and how you want to use this activity.

Candy Graphed on a Wooden Table

Have your kids been learning about vertical bar graphs? Pictographs?

This is an exciting way to bring some of those concepts to life.

Again, try not to get too technical on me here – this is just a fun way for kids to see data and think about graphing in a tasty way.
