Create and Construct with Popsicle Sticks

When I spotted this idea on Pinterest, I knew I had to try it! All I needed to make it happen was a batch of large, colorful Popsicle Sticks and a roll of Velcro Dots!

I could not wait for my kids to get started creating letters and constructing geometric shapes!

You can let your kids help pick out the colors that they want to use. You could also use this time to teach your little ones colors. I’ve also used this to help with counting and grouping!

Create and Construct with Popsicle Sticks

I started by attaching Velcro Dots to each end of the Popsicle Sticks (using two identical dots on each side)…

… and then flipping them over and using two opposite Velcro Dots on the other side of each stick.

You can always let your older kids help out with this part!

Build and Construct with Popsicle Sticks

I prepared 50 sticks so more than one of my kiddos can play with these at the same time.

During naptime one day, I finished prepping them, and that afternoon, we began creating letters…

…and constructing geometric shapes!

(Quick Tip: It’s never too early to introduce the concept of angles.)

They loved this idea!

Constructing shapes seemed to be their favorite!

When Daddy got home that evening, they started building with him!

I love that my kids get excited to show him everything they learning.

They put their 50 sticks together as he helped them build a few 3-D shapes…which then turned in to this whole scene…which resulted in everyone turning to me and saying, “Mom, we’re gonna need more sticks.” ha!

The sky is the limit with this activity, and I love the opportunity it gives kids to interact with all kinds of concepts in a hands-on way!

I find that they learn a lot better when they aren’t using the traditional pencil and paper method.

Let me know if you try this idea with your kids. It’s definitely been a favorite addition to our rotation of activities, and I love that after lots and lots of play, the Velcro Dots have not come off of the sticks. YAY!

Psst…I’m thinking these could be PERFECT for creating constellations. I’m tucking that idea away for sure!
