Little House on the Prairie Books
Learning about the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder has been a really special part of our family’s homeschooling experience, and together, we have enjoyed several different Little House on the Prairie books.
Over the years, we have watched the Little House on the Prairie television series, but we’ve also built a sweet Little House book collection.

Little House on the Prairie Books We Love
First up, we have a couple of different boxed sets of the Little House on the Prairie book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
We have this original eight-book box set that reminds me of the one I had when I was a little girl.
It was purchased second-hand. It is such a gift for our family when we find quality books this way.
Over the years, we’ve found some of favorite children’s books at:
- yard sales
- thrift stores
- consignment shops
The 8-Book Box Set Includes:
- Little House in the Big Woods
- Little House on the Prairie
- Farmer Boy
- On the Banks of Plum Creek
- By the Shores of Silver Lake
- The Long Winter
- Little Town on the Prairie
- These Happy Golden Years
This 9-Volume Set includes The First Four Years.
Then we were gifted this collector’s set that includes full-color versions of the first five books in the original series.
- Little House in the Big Woods
- Farmer Boy
- Little House on the Prairie
- On the Banks of Plum Creek
- By the Shores of Silver Lake
These full-color books have such nice glossy pages, and I would love to have the other books in this format. Maybe I’ll eventually run across them at a thrift store!
You may feel that having two different sets is unnecessary, but for a variety of different reasons, it has come in hand to have a couple of different copies of the books as we’ve read through the series together as family.
In recent years, I have seen boxed book sets like these available at both Sam’s Club and Costco.
When I’m not able to score a second-hand deal, shopping the book sections of these large big box stores has been my next best option.
In addition to the classic versions of these stories, we have collected a handful of other Little House books!
There are so many beautiful read-aloud versions of this classic story from the Little House series.
As with the boxed sets, some of these books have been thrifted and some of them have been gifted.
Love these beautiful hardback editions with dustcovers.
They include the original stories written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and illustrated by Garth Williams.
If you have younger kids or grandkids and want to introduce them to the Ingalls family, they may enjoy these books designed for early readers.
A Little House Picture Book Treasury includes six adaptations from The Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
The Picture Book Treasury includes six stories of life on the prairie:
- A Little Prairie House
- Going to Town
- County Fair
- Sugar Snow
- Winter Days in the Big Woods
- Christmas in the Big Woods
These stories, and other My First Little House Books can be purchased separately.
I’ve seen paperback versions as well as hardback versions like this copy of A Little House Birthday.
These picture books are based off of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories and illustrated by Renee Graef.
For comparison, the book recommendations for the picture books is ages 3-8, and for the classic chapter books it’s ages 8-12.
As with any book recommendation, I always suggest considering your specific child and their individual developmental stage and interest level in a book.
When I was a classroom teacher, I found the original chapter books to be fantastic read-alouds for my students.
In our homeschooling life, I’ve used them much in the same way over the years.
Another sweet option we’ve added to our collection at some point is Little Author in the Big Woods.
This is a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder by Yona Zeldis McDonough with illustrations by Jennifer Thermes.
This book about this beloved pioneer girl is also recommended for ages 8-12, but in my opinion, it’s a bit of an easier read than the classic story books that have that same age recommendation.
If you have a child who loves biographies, this version from the Childhood of Famous Americans series is another great option!
Another second-hand special edition to our collection of Little House books is A Little House Christmas.
This book is a collection of holiday stories from the Little House Books.
You will recognize the words of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the artwork of Garth Williams.
- Christmas in the Big Woods
- Christmas on the Prairie
- A Variety of Stories – Christmas on Plum Creek
If have discovered other sweet editions you’d like to share in the comments below, we would love to hear about your family’s favorites.

Hello Elizabeth, Looking for some Little House advice, I’m wanting to purchase my own set of the Little House series. Which would you would recommend, the collector’s full color glossy page version or hardcover with dust jackets? I’m expecting them to get much use and want the set to last a long time!!
Thank you for following along – The only hardcover we have with a dust jacket is book one – I would love to have the others in that format, but the softbacks have been great and lasted a long time for us! I hope you find a set you love – such sweet, timeless stories!
