  • 1 Tablespoon of Butter – You’ll use melted butter to line your ramekins, so that the juicy apples in the filling don’t stick to the sides too much.
  • 3 Large Apples – Choose three medium apples, peel them, and cut them into chunks that are 1-inch wide and 1/2-inch thick. For advice on the best apples to use for this quick apple dessert, keep reading!
  • 3 Tablespoons of Brown Sugar – You can use either light or dark brown sugar. It’s all dependent on the molasses content of the sugar. So if you want more of that flavor, choose dark brown sugar.
  • 1/8 Teaspoon of Cinnamon – This apple crisp is going to have a filling of warm, cinnamon apples.
  • 1/8 Teaspoon of Nutmeg – Pssst! Have you ever tried using fresh-grated nutmeg? The flavor is a night-and-day difference from ground nutmeg!

Topping:

  • 2/3 Cup of Packed Brown Sugar – The crumble topping needs to be sweet! Do you want it sweeter? Add a small drizzle of maple syrup.
  • 1/2 Cup of Flour – All-purpose flour works great, although wheat flour works well too.
  • 1/2 Cup of Oats – Old-fashioned oats make the best topping for your individual apple cobbler. They are sometimes labeled as “rolled oats”. If all you have on hand are quick oats, feel free to use those. However, quick-cooking oats are smaller and you’ll have a less crumbly topping.
  • 1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon – Ground cinnamon adds a warmth to this apple crumble (and all our favorite desserts, let’s just be honest!)
  • 6 Tablespoons of Butter – The melted butter helps bind the various dry ingredients into coarse crumbs.

What Kind Of Apples To Use To Make Mini Apple Crisps

You can really use any type of apple that you like to make this apple crisp recipe, but while all apples will make a delicious dessert, using tart apples will make a different flavor and texture than sweet apples.

Typically, tart apples are used for baking purposes.

They have a firmer texture and have less sugar than sweet apples. This makes them taste almost sour if you eat them raw as a snack, but the sugar in them caramelizes so nicely when baked.

Also, their firm texture means that they don’t turn into mush when baked. They soften, but they still maintain their shape.

Some tart apples to look for are:

  • Granny Smith apples
  • Honeycrisp apples
  • McIntosh apples
  • Jonagold apples
  • Pink Lady apples

On the other hand, sweet apples make for super delicious apple crisps.

They have a higher sugar content, which is why they are typically the ones sold as snacking apples.

However, all that sugar means that they break down quite a bit when baked.

If you want that sort of texture, here are some sweet apples to try:

  • Gala apples
  • Fuji apples
  • Ambrosia apples

For this dessert, my advice is to avoid Red Delicious and Golden Delicious apple varieties altogether.

They become just plain mealy when baked or cooked.

Making Apple Crisp Individual Desserts Ahead Of Time

If you’re planning on making this baked apple dessert for a gathering or other event, it’s helpful to know what you can make ahead of time.

That way, you’re not stressing in the kitchen the day of your event!

Baked Apple Crisps in Individual Ramekins

The ingredients for the crumble topping can be made up to 5 days in advance, placed in an airtight container, and stored in the refrigerator.

This saves you both a step and a dirtied dish when it’s time to put the small apple desserts together.

You can’t make the apple filling too far ahead of time, or the apples will start to discolor.

However, they’ll be coated with cinnamon and sugar anyways, so it’s not too big of a deal! You can make the apple filling a day ahead of time.

You can even fill the ramekins with it!

Simply cover the filled ramekins with plastic wrap and leave them in the fridge.

If you’ll be making your individual apple crisps with premade, chilled topping and filling, you’ll need to add approximately 3 to 5 minutes to the total baking time.

Variations On This Easy Fall Dessert

  • Make it a fruit crisp by adding freshly diced pears to the apples.
  • Add a little extra spice to the filling by mixing in a pinch of cardamom and a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • For a crunchier topping, add chopped walnuts or pecans.
  • Brown the butter used for the topping! Browned butter has a nutty, savory flavor to it that plain melted butter doesn’t provide.
