Why You’ll Love this Creamy Spinach Dip

  • Spinach Dip is a classic! – Knorr creates some truly delicious seasoning packets for soups and dips, and this recipe takes advantage of the flavor of their vegetable soup flavoring packet. In fact, this specific packet of seasonings has been used for spinach dips so frequently that the picture on the front of the package is of a spinach dip, not a soup. They used to have the infamous Knorr Spinach Dip recipe card printed on the back of the packet. I’m not sure it’s there anymore, but that’s where I come in. This fresh spinach dip tastes exactly like the famous Knorr dip recipe.

  • This dip is a go-to recipes for gatherings! – Do you need a low-carb crowd pleaser? Looking for a keto recipe with rave reviews? Hosting a gluten-free game night? This easy spinach dip checks all the boxes, while still bringing the best flavor!
  • It’s so quick and easy to put together! – Most of the recipe is simply dumping ingredients in a bowl and stirring them up. All you need to do is chop spinach and dice onions, and that takes next to no time.

Ingredients Needed for this Easy Spinach Dip

It’s easy to make one of my favorite appetizers.

Simply add these four ingredients to a large bowl, mix, and serve with your dipper of choice!

Ingredients for Spinach Dip Recipe - Sitting on Kitchen Counter
  • 1 Package of Knorr’s Vegetable Recipe Mix – A packet of Knorr’s vegetable mix will serve as the flavor base of this particular dip. This seasoning mix includes carrots, onions, tomatoes, celery root, leeks, cabbage, cauliflower, green peas, and potatoes.
  • 1 Bag of Spinach – You can use both frozen spinach and fresh baby spinach for this simple spinach dip recipe. If opting to use frozen spinach, be sure to let the spinach thaw and any excess water drain completely.
  • 16 Ounces of Sour Cream – Sour cream is the creamy star of this spinach dip. You could also try this recipe using Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, or cream cheese. I would suggest only replacing half of the sour cream with any of those substitutions on your first time. Simply swap out a cup of sour cream for a cup mayonnaise, for example.
  • 1 Cup of Diced Green Onion – These diced green onions give a pleasant crunch and a bright flavor!

How to Make this Cold Spinach Dip Recipe

This take on this classic recipes will have you game day ready in no time.

Once you thaw the spinach, the entire dip comes together in less than ten minutes.

  1. First, you need to prep your spinach! If you are using fresh spinach, chop it into small slivers that would fit easily on a cracker. If you are using frozen spinach, make sure to let it thaw first, and then use a paper towel to soak up as much of the excess moisture as possible.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, diced onions, and soup mix.
  3. After these other three ingredients are thoroughly combined, then add your chopped spinach or thawed spinach.
  4. Place the spinach mixture into your serving dish and pop it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes prior to serving, so that it can chill and firm up.

Tips for the Best Spinach Dip

Here are my top tips to make this spinach dip absolutely perfect:

  • Are you using frozen spinach? Be sure to let the spinach thaw and drain completely. Too much liquid will mess up that creamy dip texture! I like to either pour out the bag of spinach into a colander and sit it in the sink until the finishes thawing, or lay it out on a baking sheet covered with a paper towel or two.
  • You can find Knorr vegetable mixes on the grocery store shelves. For this recipe, we usually use this brand but would love to hear if there are any others you try and love!
  • Is your dip a little bit more runny than you would prefer? Simply add a little thickening agent, such as flour or cornstarch. A little goes a long way, so start with just one teaspoon and go from there. If you wind up overcorrecting, a splash of milk will thin things up again.

Flavor Change-Ups to Try

It’s fun to take dip recipes and tweak ingredients to unlock brand new flavors.

After enjoying this spinach recipe as written, here are some changes you can try for next time:

  • Serve your spinach dip in a bread bowl or small baking dish surrounded by tortilla chips, pita chips, pita bread, baguette slices, or a loaf of sourdough bread town into smaller pieces.
  • If you’re looking for some favorite dippers to go with gluten-free dips, try celery sticks, carrot sticks, raw broccoli, cauliflower, or sliced bell peppers! Any fresh vegetables will work.
  • The original version of this spinach dip, as found on the Knorr package, included a squeeze of lemon juice and a handful of chopped water chestnuts. Give it a try!
  • To take this to the next level, consider adding a bit of shredded mozzarella cheese or parmesan cheese to the top of your dip. You could also sprinkle an extra handful of green onions.
  • To turn this cold spinach dip into a hot spinach artichoke dip recipe, simply add one can of drained and diced artichoke hearts, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, a crack of black pepper, and a handful of red pepper flakes. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Storing Leftover Spinach Dip

If you have any leftover spinach dip, place it in an airtight container and put it in the fridge.

After you store leftovers, you can enjoy it later for 3-4 days.
