Of course these classic-tasting cookies can be made with regular old sugar and peanut butter.
Or you can use different options that might be a better fit for those who are a little bit more selective about ingredients they choose to use.
Peanut Butter Cookie Ingredients
- 1 Cup of Sugar – Just about any sugar will do. The first time we tried this recipe we used Classic Monk Fruit Sweetener. Not bad, but these sure do taste delicious made with Cane Sugar.
- 1 Cup of Peanut Butter – What is your family’s favorite peanut butter? The Kirkland brand from Costco? Or maybe they prefer Jif Peanut Butter. Around here, my crew loves Jif Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter! Any of these options have worked great for us in this recipe.
- 1 Egg
- 1 Cup of Chocolate Chips (optional) – This is another flexible part of this recipe. Trying to cut the sugar? We have tried a variety of different no sugar added chocolate chips – including this Bake Believe brand pictured here. Lily’s is another brand we’ve tried! Want to use a different kind of chocolate chips? Go for it – milk chocolate, semi-sweet, dark, white – honestly, any kind of chocolate is delicious in this recipe!
- Additional Chocolate Chips/Chocolate Morsels (optional) – In the photos here, you’ll see Aldi brand dark chocolate morsels added to the tops of the cookies after they come out of the oven.
Disclaimer: We do not claim to be nutritionists. These are simply some swaps we’ve used at various times that we thought we would mention to you.
We thought it would be helpful to show how it’s possible to cut the sugar a bit in this recipe – but we also thought you would like to see how easily the mixture can be adjusted based on what you have on hand or what your particular family needs or likes.
Cooking Instructions for Cookies
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Mix together sugar, peanut butter, egg, and chocolate chips (optional).
- Scoop the cookie mixture out onto a non-stick cookie sheet. For this step, we use our full-size ice-cream scoop – filling the scoop at least half-full with the cookie mixture – spacing each cookie out approximately 2 inches from the next. This amount of cookie dough creates pretty large cookies! We enjoy the larger size, but you may prefer to go with smaller-size cookies. If so, you’ll most likely want to adjust your baking time a bit. In our photos here, you’ll see our favorite Made in the USA Cookie Sheets as well as our go-to non-stick baking mats. For this recipe, we are able to fit approximately six cookies on each baking sheet.
- Bake at 350 for approximately 20 minutes. Remember, this 20 minute baking time is for those larger-size cookies we like around here.
- When the cookies are finished baking, remove them from the oven.
- Round each cookie and quickly add more chocolate to the top.
Doubling the Recipe
For our family, we typically double the recipe: two cups of sugar, two cups of peanut butter, 2 eggs, and 2 cups of chocolate.
This provides us with 12 large cookies – 2 per person and works out perfectly!
Rounding Cookies with a Glass Jar
It was from Leigh Anne Wilkes, Your Home Based Mom, that I learned this idea!
When your cookies come out of the oven, you can use a wide mouth glass canning jar or a large cup to give them a perfectly rounded shape.
Simply place the jar or cup over each cookie and move it around in a circular motion, rounding the freshly-baked cookie.
It works like magic!
You can browse Leigh Anne’s yummy cookie recipes here.
Topping the Cookies with More Chocolate
If you decide to incorporate chocolate into these peanut butter cookies, you can add even more here at this step!
I was originally inspired to do this by watching Lil’ Luna add more chocolate to the top of some of her favorite cookie recipes!
After each cookie has been rounded, simply press a few more pieces of chocolate into the top.
You can use regular chocolate chips – or pictured here in this post are Aldi brand dark chocolate morsels.
The morsel-size chocolate is perfect for this step if you like the idea of more chocolate.
Prepping Cookie Ahead of Time or Storing Leftovers
These cookies are perfect for prepping ahead of time and freezing until a gathering or time of gifting.
Need to simply store a few you have leftover?
These store well and taste delicious leftover for a few days!
Quick Tip: Warming them back up and serving them with ice cream might just be the best kept secret of all.

This has been my mom’s go-to recipe for 30 years; no one ever believes how easy they are to make. We’ve dropped the sugar to 1/2 cup and they are still wonderful! High quality chocolate chips bring it to the next level!
I was going to make these again today – I’m going to try your sugar idea! THANK YOU!
