Why You’re Going To Love These Christmas Oreo Balls!

  • Only four ingredients! – This perfect treat uses only four, simple ingredients to make a truly decadent truffle ball.
  • It’s a crowd pleaser!  – Oreo truffles are a favorite treat at every cookie exchange or holiday gathering. They’re always one of the first treats gone! We even served these at our wedding. Guess what’s in that little treat box there? You guessed it! Oreo Truffles – the ones we served were topped with Andes Baking Chips.

No matter what other toppings are highlighted in this post, the Andes Baking Chips are my absolute favorite thing to place atop these Oreo Truffles – Perfection!

The only problem with sharing these at our wedding in this way is that now – even this many years later – our friends and family want these gifted to them during the holidays. We’re not allowed to miss a year or we get in big trouble! ha!

  • Simple process! – It may look like this no-bake dessert involves a lot of steps, but it’s actually really simple and straightforward. Make cookie crumbs, add cream cheese, harden the dough, roll the balls, dip them, and set! It’s also a great recipe for trying out dipping things in melted chocolate – a great skill to allow your kids or grandkids to practice in the kitchen.

  • They’re rich and delicious! – Truffles are the pinnacle of “guilty pleasure” desserts. The rich chocolate flavor, fudgy texture, and decadent sweetness really top off the Christmas season.

  • Festive appearance! – There are many ways to top this perfect sweet treat, and they have a holly jolly look to them no matter what you choose. Decorate each one in different ways for a fun visual at the holiday party.

Ingredients Needed To Make Christmas Oreo Truffles

This holiday dessert uses only four ingredients that you can easily find at your local grocery store.

I love festive treats where I don’t have to jump from one store to another looking for specific ingredients.

  • 36 Oreo Cookies  – For this Oreo truffle recipe, use the classic Oreo cookie! I know we all love the double-stuffed Oreos for the cookie jar, but the cookie-to-filling ratio of the standard, single-stuffed Oreo cookie is exactly what you need for these classic Oreo balls.
  • 8 Ounces of Cream Cheese – Allow it to soften! Also, don’t use low-fat cream cheese. This is a rich, decadent recipe, so you’ll want the higher fat content. Standard, full-fat cream cheese is going to give you the best flavor and the smoothest consistency.
  • 12 Ounces of Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips – You’ll melt this and use it for dipping. I like to use regular, semi-sweet chocolate chips for this, but you can use chocolate candy melts, almond bark (The Vanilla is almond bark is delicious.), or melting chocolate. You can also swap out to milk chocolate or dark chocolate if you prefer. I like the slightly bitter flavor of semi-sweet chocolate, since the truffle ball itself is so sweet.
  • 1 Tablespoon of Coconut or Vegetable Oil – Adding a small amount of vegetable oil or coconut oil to the melted chocolate helps the dipping chocolate to coat each of the small balls with a thin, smooth, and glossy coating of chocolate.

How To Make This Oreo Ball Recipe

Don’t let the number of steps to this easy dessert recipe overwhelm you!

It’s really an easy recipe, and most of the time is spent waiting to let the dough harden or the chocolate set.

You can also often start on the next step while you’re waiting.

  1. Place the Oreo cookies in a food processor or blender, and blitz them until they become fine crumbs. In a pinch, you can achieve a similar result using a Ziploc bag and a rolling pin.
  2. Add the softened block of cream cheese to the crushed Oreos, and combine until smooth and well-blended. You can use an electric mixer for this, if you’d rather.
  3. Use a small cookie scoop to place equally-sized pieces of dough on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Place the prepared baking sheet in the freezer for the dough to harden. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. After the dough has hardened, roll each section into round, 1-inch balls.
  6. Use the microwave to melt chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 30 second intervals. Don’t have a microwave? Use a double boiler! Add the oil to help make the chocolate coating thin and smooth.
  7. Dip each truffle ball into the melted chocolate, using a fork. Use the rim of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. Place each dipped ball back on the baking sheet.
  8. Decorate each truffle as desired. Need ideas? I’ve got you covered – see below!
  9. Allow the chocolate to harden at room temperature, or place the cookie sheets back into the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes.

Ways To Top These Holiday Oreo Cookie Balls

One of my favorite things about this no-bake holiday treat is that there are so many ways to decorate them!

Here are some ideas to get you going.

White Plate Filled with Oreo Truffles
  • Chopped candy canes or peppermint pieces (use mint Oreos or a splash of peppermint extract for a super candy cane treat)
  • Christmas sprinkles (or other types of sprinkles – Use different colors for gatherings like baby showers.)
  • Chopped white chocolate chips
  • Chocolate drizzle (enjoy a visual contrast by using white chocolate or white almond bark)
  • Chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds
  • Crushed cookie crumbs – The crumbs don’t have to be regular Oreos! Try golden Oreos or even sugar cookies! Yum!
  • I’ll say it again – The Andes Baking Chips are my fav! During the holiday season, I’m usually able to find these in the grocery stores.
  • I’m including this as a topping, but it’s a bit of a twist. Why not stick a lollipop stick in your truffle ball? Then they’re somewhat like a cake pop!

Storing Leftover Christmas Oreo Truffle Balls

Because of the dairy in the softened cream cheese, leftover Oreo truffle balls need to be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

To keep them from sticking together as they re-harden, add wax paper between layers of truffle balls.

When it’s time to enjoy those leftovers, set them out on the counter or on a cookie tray for an hour or two before serving.

This will make certain they aren’t too difficult to bite into when the time comes.

Making Christmas Truffle Balls Ahead Of Time

The holiday season is a busy time for all of us, and I love recipes that I can make well ahead of time and store in the freezer.

This easy recipe can be made in it’s entirety, from start to finish, and then stored frozen in a Ziploc bag or airtight container for up to 3 months.

Just think – you could have some of your Christmas cookies finished in October!

When it’s time to enjoy them, set the container in the refrigerator to slowly thaw overnight.
