What You’ll Love About this Fresh Peach Cobbler Recipe

  • It uses real, fresh ingredients! – Don’t get me wrong, I love an easy peach cobbler recipe that uses canned peaches. But sometimes, you just need the flavor and texture of fresh, juicy peaches. This peach crisp recipe uses fresh peaches and all of the basic pantry ingredients you already have on hand.

  • The topping is delicious! – Have you ever had a cobbler where the topping is little more than oatmeal or granola? Or perhaps resembled something similar to biscuits? The cake-like topping on top of this delicious cobbler is moist, soft, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
  • The flavors are perfect! – Sweet peaches that slightly caramelize while baking, the spice of cinnamon and nutmeg, the nutty melted butter flavor that runs through the golden brown top of the cobbler… they all come together into the perfect dessert.
  • It’s a summertime comfort food! – Summer foods are usually light fare, but a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream alongside this homemade peach cobbler is summer’s favorite dessert.

Ingredients Needed for Easy Fresh Peach Cobbler

For The Peach Filling:

  • 8 Peaches – Move over, canned peach slices! You have your place, but this recipe isn’t it. Choose 8 of the best peaches from the height of peach season. Wash them and slice them. No need to peel them for this cobbler recipe! Either yellow or white peaches work fine.
  • 1/4 Cup of White Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup of Brown Sugar – By dividing the sugar into half white and half brown, we add just a slight molasses flavor that melts into the peach juices and makes a delicious sauce.
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Ground Nutmeg – If you really want to bump up the flavor, swap out the ground nutmeg for fresh grated nutmeg! You’ll be amazed at the difference.
  • 1 Teaspoon of Lemon Juice – There’s a lot of sweetness in this cobbler. The splash of fresh lemon juice adds just enough tartness to balance it out.
  • 2 Teaspoons of Cornstarch – Your thickening agent that helps turn the peach juice into a thick sauce.

For The Cobbler Topping:

  • 1 Cup of Flour – All-purpose flour works just fine for this! Feel free to switch to whole wheat flour if you prefer.
  • 1/4 Cup of White Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder – This butter topping will cook up somewhat like a cake, so it needs a leavening agent.
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 6 Tablespoons of Butter – Make sure your butter is cold! You’ll be cutting it into the flour mixture, and the colder the butter is, the more airy and flaky your cobbler topping will be. Use unsalted butter, or else omit salt as a separate ingredient.
  • 3 Tablespoons of Sugar – You’ll combine this sugar with the final teaspoon of ground cinnamon to make a cinnamon sugar sprinkle to put on top. If you like less sugar in your fruit desserts, you can skip this part.

How to Make this Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler Recipe

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, and grease your baking dish. You can use a cooking spray for this, or rub on a thin layer of butter. You’re already using most of a stick of butter for the crumb topping, so you might as well use the last 2 teaspoons to grease the pan.
  2. Make your peach mixture by combining the sliced peaches, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch together in a large bowl until evenly combined.
  3. Spoon the peach filling into the baking dish and bake for 10 minutes.
  4. In the meantime, it’s time to make the buttery topping! In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, white sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Then, using a pastry cutter or food processor, cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles the texture of coarse sand.
  5. Place the crumb topping mixture on top of the peaches when they come out of the oven.
  6. Mix together the white sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar generously on top of the batter.
  7. Place the cobbler back into the oven, and bake for 30 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  8. Serve the cobbler straight from the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Storing Leftover Fruit Cobbler

The best way to store leftover peach cobbler is by placing it in an airtight container and popping it in the fridge.

It will stay fresh for up to 5 days.

Keep in mind that the juices at the bottom of the pan will thicken significantly when chilled!

It will still taste delicious, but there will be less sauce for your scoop of ice cream when you go to enjoy it next time.

Top Tips For Homemade Peach Cobbler

  • Be sure to pick your peaches well! Overly ripe peaches will have a mushy texture. Unripe peaches simply don’t have enough flavor and sweetness.
  • For best results, use fresh peaches. Sadly… peaches aren’t in season all year round. You can still use this peach cobbler recipe with frozen, thawed peaches. After you thaw them, blot them dry and then continue following the recipe. I wouldn’t recommend using canned peaches in this recipe, as they are simply too soft.

  • You can use this easy recipe for other types of fresh fruit cobbler! Simply swap out the peaches for other fruits, and enjoy apple cobbler, blackberry cobbler, and other favorite recipes when it’s the time of year to get those fruits fresh!

  • If you can, use Freestone peaches. Just like different apple varieties bake up differently, so do different peach varieties. All of them taste great, but Freestone peaches are the easiest to pit and slice. And if you do decide to peel them, they are hands-down the easiest peaches to peel.
  • We’re using just enough cornstarch in this recipe to keep the peach juices from being too watery to manage. However, if you want your peach sauce to be firmer (more like a peach pie, for instance), you can increase the amount of cornstarch by 1 teaspoon.
