French Toast Ingredients Sitting on Kitchen Counter Top

If not, there are lots of swaps you can make.

Here’s what you’ll need to make two peanut butter and jelly French toast sandwiches:

  • 4 Slices of Texas Toast – I love the texture and flavor of thick Texas toast slices. They hold up well to all of the gooey ingredients involved in this recipe: peanut butter, jelly, eggs, milk… your bread slices are going to have to handle a lot. But you can surely try using regular white bread instead, if that’s what you have on hand. Sourdough bread would also probably hold up well, and would add a sour tang that will balance out all of the sweetness.

Note: If you have a little extra cash on hand, Brioche bread is a delicious option for this recipe! Aldi oftentimes has more affordable brioche in stock!

  • 2 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter – Some would say creamy peanut butter is going to spread more easily, but we have tried this recipe both ways – creamy peanut butter and crunchy peanut butter – both were delicious. If you want to reduce the sugar content, try using natural peanut butter. Do you have peanut allergies to consider? Simply swap the peanut butter out for almond butter or another nut butter of your choice.
  • 2 Tablespoons of Jelly – Our family loves the strawberry jam from Costco, but grape jelly also works well in this recipe.
  • 2 Eggs -You can’t make French toast without cracking a couple large eggs!
  • 1/2 Cup of Milk – For a higher protein and fat content, use whole milk. Wanting to avoid dairy? Try almond milk.
  • 1 Tablespoon of Sugar – French toast usually has a little extra sweetness to it. You can use any type of sugar you like – or skip this step altogether. Honestly, I usually pass on this ingredient, but you may have strong feelings otherwise. ha!
  • 1 Tablespoon of Ground Cinnamon – I love the flavor this spoonful of cinnamon adds to French toast!
  • 1 Tablespoon of Butter – You’ll melt butter in the pan or on the griddle. This is going to help create a delicious golden crust on the French toast. Either salted or unsalted is just fine. I typically just use what I have on hand ready to go.

How To Make Peanut Butter And Jelly Stuffed French Toast

This recipe is big on taste, but easy on time!

Here’s how to make this quick and delicious twist on French toast.

  1. First up – make your PB&J sandwiches! You have enough ingredients to make two of them. Simply lay each of the four slices of bread flat on the counter top, and spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on two of them and 1 tablespoon of jelly on the others. Place the peanut butter slice of bread on top of the jelly slice, and set your peanut butter and jelly sandwiches aside.
  2. Set a large skillet or large griddle on the stove over medium-high heat, and as it warms up, whisk together your egg mixture. To do this, whisk eggs, milk, sugar (Remember, you can skip the sugar.), and cinnamon in a shallow bowl until well-combined.
  3. Place a small pat of butter in your skillet, and use the melted butter to coat the skillet or griddle. This creates a flavorful non-stick surface.
  4. Quickly dip the PB&J sandwiches into the egg mixture. Because this version of French toast is so thick, it’s important not to let the bread soak up too much of the egg. Just do a quick dip on both sides of the sandwich.
  5. Immediately place the dipped sandwich onto the hot pan or griddle. Allow the first side to cool for 2-3 minutes, and then flip it over until both sides of sandwiches are a golden brown.
  6. Remove the French toast sandwich from the skillet and place it on a cutting board. Allow the sandwich cool a bit, and then cut it in half. Serve and enjoy!

How To Top These French Toast Sandwiches

The best way to enjoy French toast is with a wide array of topping options!

Here are a few to consider:

  • powdered sugar
  • maple syrup
  • slices of fresh fruit
  • whipped cream
  • raspberry preserves
  • ice cream

There’s a lot of sweet in this French toast, so balance out the plate with some sausage links or bacon slices.

Top Tips For Perfect PB&J French Toast

  1. Use thick bread! Your bread has to be thick enough to not become a soggy mess when the peanut butter, jelly, and egg mixture are all loaded onto it. In fact, stale bread works particularly well because of this.
  2. To speed up a busy morning, make the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches ahead of time.
  3. Add a splash of vanilla extract to the egg mixture to deepen the flavor profile.
  4. Make sure to spread the peanut butter and jelly all the way to the very edges of the bread.
  5. Even if you typically cut off the crusts when making PB+J sandwiches for your children, leave them on for this recipe. Again, it comes back to helping strengthen the bread so that it doesn’t fall apart with all of the liquid in this recipe! You can always trim them off once the French toast is finished and on the plate.
