It’s the easiest way to make a showstopping holiday dessert, without spending a whole afternoon in the kitchen.
- 36 Oreos – There are typically 36 cookies in an entire package of Oreos, and you can use any flavor of Oreo that you prefer. I like to use the classic, chocolate Oreos for this simple Oreo truffle recipe, but you can swap them out for mint Oreos or Golden Oreos if you prefer.
- 4 Ounces of Cream Cheese – This will help bind all of the Oreo cookie crumbs together. Set your block of cream cheese out on the counter overnight so that it softens and comes up to room temperature.
- White Candy Melts – This will be your truffle coating. I like to use candy melts because they are easier to work with than melted chocolate, and you have more color options. Make a batch using pink candy melts or red candy melts. If you prefer, you could also use melted almond bark or even melted white chocolate.
- Candy Hearts – For a simple and easy decoration, use these candy hearts. They look so colorful and sweet on top of the white candy coating.
How To Make Valentine’s Day Oreo Truffles
Let me show you my easy way to make one of our family’s favorite desserts for this time of year!
- Use a food processor or blender to pulse the Oreo cookies until they turn into fine crumbs. If you have neither, simply place whole cookies into a sturdy Ziplock bag, and use a rolling pin to crush them into fine Oreo crumbs.
- Pour the Oreo mixture into a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, or a large bowl. Add the softened cream cheese, and blend the cookie crumbs and the cream cheese together until they reach a smooth consistency and come together into a ball.
- Using a small cookie scoop, scoop out small amounts of cookie dough and roll them in the palms of your hands into evenly-shaped, 1-inch balls. We do this before chilling the cookie mixture, because it’s so much easier to work with at this stage.
- Line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper. Place the truffle balls on the prepared baking sheet, and move them into the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes.
- In the meantime, place the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt the candies in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in between. If you prefer, you can also use a double boiler to melt the candies.
- Once the candy is melted, allow it to cool slightly. You need the melted candy to remain liquid, but not be so hot that the truffle balls will break down when they are dipped.
- Using a fork, dip each Oreo ball individually into the melted candy, taking care to coat the entire outside of the ball.
- Place the dipped truffle ball back on the parchment paper, and place a candy heart on the top before the coating hardens. It hardens fast, so you’ll want to put on the candy heart as soon as you dip each ball.
Storing Leftover Oreo Chocolate Truffles
These homemade truffles are super easy to store!
Simply place them in large freezer bags or an airtight container.
They’ll be fine on the counter at room temperature for a few hours, but if you need to store them longer than that, they’ll need to be chilled.
These truffles can be stored in the fridge for a week, or in the freezer for up to three months.
Other Toppings To Try On Homemade Oreo Cookie Balls
I love the look of bright red and pink candy hearts on the white dipped background, but there are more than one ways to top this perfect treat!
Here are some ideas to change up your Valentine’s Day Oreo balls and give them your own special touch.
- Change The Chocolate Coating – Use different colors of candy melts, or melt your own chocolate. When you do this, you can choose what type of chocolate flavor you prefer, from dark chocolate to milk chocolate. Add a small amount of coconut oil to the melted chocolate, to make it easier to dip.
- Add A Drizzle – If you’re melting chocolate, why not melt more chocolate of a different type (like semi-sweet chocolate chips) and use it to create a chocolate drizzle on top of each truffle? You can even do this with the candy melts!
- Sprinkles! – Festive sprinkles are a fun way to add color to this yummy treat! Smashed candy canes add both the Valentine’s Day colors, and a pop of mint flavor.
- Make Them Hearts – Truffles are usually balls… but do they have to be? I think not! Use a mini heart cookie cutter to turn your Oreo ball truffles into heart-shaped truffles! You’ll dip and decorate them the exact same way.
